The farming village of Pooh is situated in the boarder district of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, and shares its eastern boundary with Tibet. The Buddhist orchard town is on the National Highway 22, which is also called the Hindustan-Tibet road. Pooh is also sometimes written as ‘Puh’ or ‘Poo’.
In Pooh, the ‘Spiti’ river from India meets with the ‘Sutlej’ river from Tibet, and combines to become one; just as Kinnaur is the coming-together of India and Tibet. Along with its rugged snowcapped mountains and harsh features, the language, Buddhist spirituality, food and customs are heavily influenced by its neighbor Tibet.
The local’s ancestry can be described as Tibto-mongoloid, originating from Mongolia and Tibet. Their relaxed and friendly attitude can be attributed to the calm mountain atmosphere and successful apple farming industry.
The village of Pooh is also home to the Translator’s Temple, which was part of the Purang-guge Kingdom during King Yeshe-o’s time. Some parts of this Buddhist temple, still used by the locals today for’ Puja’, can be dated back to the 11th century.
At an altitude of 2800 meters above sea level, it can be quite cold during the winters, but the summers are quite pleasant, therefore the best time to visit is from May to October.
